HOW TO CARE FOR SNEAKERS

Bringing home a nice new pair of sneakers is great, but after a few months, they look like you've made at least a cross-country trek. What to do?

Throw them away and buy new ones? That would be a shame! The damage can be repaired and the shoes can be saved, you just need to know how to do it.

How do you revive worn-out sneakers at home?

Prevention is the key to sneaker care. I'm sure you're grabbing your head right now, telling yourself it's boring and who would volunteer to do it, but if you want to keep your shoes nice and clean, you can't do it without preventative care. Especially if you're the proud owner of white sneakers, home care is really necessary for those.

White rubber is very susceptible to any kind of dirt. Basically, all it takes is a few times through a puddle and the snow-white colour becomes a greyish something. You can buy special products at the store, but there are also some home-friendly tips to restore the rubber to its original appearance. For example, try the classic quicksand you use to clean your bathtub at home. Simply apply to the rubber and scrub with a brush. If you don't have it at home, you can use baking soda or toothpaste.

To wash or not to wash?

One of the easiest solutions is to throw your shoes in the washing machine. Of course, a washing machine will wash your trainers, but the question is, how long will they last? Shoes washed in a washing machine simply deteriorate much faster. If you can't resist the washing machine, at least be as gentle as possible. Washing your laces is no problem, but don't forget to put them in a wash bag so they don't mysteriously get tangled in the machine. Put the sneakers themselves in a wash bag (one for each shoe). If you don't have bags, old pillowcases or dust bags from other shoes or purses will do just as well. Throw a couple of old towels in the washing machine too, so the shoes don't bang against the metal drum. Wash your shoes at 30 degrees. If possible, take the insoles out of the shoes before washing them and wash them separately. When you take the trainers out of the washing machine, stuff them with newspaper or paper towels and leave them to dry in a well-ventilated place. But expect to wait about three days for them to dry properly.
